The English language can get a little ridiculous sometimes. There are a lot of words that are pronounced differently than what phonics would suggest. Even when words are translated from foreign languages there are these weird pronunciations.
Take Spanish for example. You have all these Js and Rs that are really Hs. Jalapeno is pronounced more like Halapeno (or Ha La Peen Yo). Names like Royce and Royler that are pronounced Hoyce and Hoyler. Why?! Wouldn’t it make more sense to spell those words to match their pronunciations? The English pronunciation of their foreign words butchers everything anyways and is not the closest fit for the original pronunciation… we might as well make it easier and spell things phonetically. But no… the English language has all these obscure rules and exceptions that help you spot educated people from less educated people (and non-native speakers). It’s kinda elitist.
